A single discarded needle can create a puncture hazard, a possible exposure to blood or body substances, and understandable concern for workers and the public. Safe removal is not a matter of simply putting on gloves and picking it up. It requires a controlled sequence, suitable equipment, correct disposal and prompt reporting. By the end of this course, learners should be able to: • identify common sharps, infectious waste and likely locations; • explain how injuries and exposure to blood or body substances can occur; • apply standard precautions, a simple risk assessment and appropriate area controls; • select and check PPE, retrieval tools, spill supplies and an approved sharps container; • describe a safe retrieval, containment, clean-up and disposal sequence; • respond correctly to a needlestick, cut, splash or other exposure; and • report hazards, incidents and equipment issues according to workplace procedures.
